Lead Guitarist Matt Reviere Leaves Scotty For The Band Perry

Nathan Thomas, Joey Sanchez, Jeffrey Harper, Scotty McCreery, Matt Reviere, Justin Ward
Heritage Amphitheater, Pocahontas State Park, Chesterfield VA - Jul 28    Dagum McCreerians

On August 18, 2013, Scotty's lead guitarist Matt Reviere started work with The Band Perry.

Scotty fans know little--no specifics--about this change, so, the most we can say is what I have already said:  Thank you, Matt, and best wishes . . . but I am not pleased, so I will state how I feel.  These views are entirely mine and do not represent Scotty or fans.

We recall that after winning American Idol in May, 2011, 17-year old Scotty McCreery forms his own band from scratch with Matt Reviere as lead guitarist, and, in October, 2011 releases his debut platinum album Clear As Day.

Then in January 2012, Scotty joins the Brad Paisley Virtual Reality Tour 2012 which includes The Band Perry, which well benefits from working with Scotty by seeing first-hand Scotty's effective outgoing, expressive, articulated singing style, and by spending time with Scotty's band Dry County.

After the Brad Paisley tour ends in October 2012, Scotty releases his Christmas album Christmas With Scotty McCreery and develops his own enormously successful tour Weekend Roadtrip Tour 2013, which debuts in February 2013 with Matt Reviere and essentially the same band members from the start.

Then in August 2013, The Band Perry, in need of a lead guitarist (theirs left), instead of developing their own lead guitarist as Scotty has done, makes Matt Reviere an offer he cannot refuse and with which Team Scotty cannot compete, basically raiding Scotty's band of its lead guitarist . . . . . . . . . THIS ‚Äčafter Team Scotty spent more than two years developing an amazing band  . . . and THIS just weeks before the release of Scotty's highly anticipated second studio album with all the many events involved with this release, the tour in high gear, and Scotty grinding out college courses--all of which The Band Perry knows.

This Band Perry move is cheap, and it is not the first time that artists have taken advantage of Team Scotty's hard work.

There are many counter responses--"these things happen all the time," "this is just business," "Matt wanted to change," "this change will be a benefit," on and on--but NO, what The Band Perry did is cheap and disrespectful, and it is *not* a pass with me, even if Scotty may have graciously--out of no real choice--given his blessing.

Team Scotty will rebuild and advance, and part of that advancement is taking stock of this event in the many ways that we will.

For fans, when it comes to voting for awards, I vote for artists with the best work, and that best work usually comes from artists with the greatest souls.  That is why we love Scotty so much!

Scotty fans will support Scotty in all ways possible and look forward to an amazing new album and great days ahead!!!

Jeffrey is the band leader, plays a variety of instruments, is now appearing as the acoustic guitar player for those radio events, and sings back up.  Nathan, in an interview, revealed he has a deep voice and never sings backup.  Chris Young is the replacement for Matt, as lead guitarist, and, IMO, is providing better harmony in concerts with his back up vocals.

Now I get it - it was Jeff Harper as back up for Scotty.   He is doing a great job!! Love  him - he smiles a lot and seems so happy.  He sounds great with Scotty also.

by DieselGal @ 11/9/2013 10:08:03 AM
When I saw Scotty's show at Rams Head in Baltimore, MD, Sept. 21,2013, the band was fantastic!

by DAR @ 11/7/2013 3:14:34 PM
Yes Chris did replace Matt, but Nathan is mostly doing the back-up singing for Scotty (such as on the Grand Ole Opry when Scotty sang The Dash).  They sound great together.  I thought I heard Scotty introduce Nathan as his band leader, but idk for sure.

by Lynne @ 11/7/2013 1:10:45 PM
I believe that Chris Young replaced Matt Reviere, and the new band leader is Jeffrey Harper.

I think that Scotty's band  Dry County is outstanding.

Jeffrey Harper - band leader, guitar, keys
Joey Sanchez - drums
Nathan Thomas - bass guitar
Justin Ward - banjo, steel guitar, electric guitar
Chris Young - lead guitar

I really haven't missed Matt at all.  I have really been impressed with his whole band and like Nathan as back-up for Scotty much more than Matt.  I think Nathan has a better voice that blends better with Scotty.  I notice he smiles quite a bit and seems very happy in his band leadership position.   All things work for good to those who trust the Lord.

by Phyllis @ 11/6/2013 10:31:58 PM
I miss Matt's guitar playing, style & how he connected with the audience. Guess I'll have to go to some Band Perry concerts! Can't blame him for going for the higher paycheck. Don't we all do that.  The new guy is doing well so I think Scotty will be fine!

by Grandmainazforscotty @ 11/3/2013 12:47:23 AM
I love the article about Matt leaving - what totally cracks me up is how phoney this guy was - on an interview with the band he was saying how cool it was to be with Scotty and to be able to say "Oh Scotty is my friend I'm with him" and then he goes and back stabs him like this.   Whatever!!!!!!!! I think the TBP is a good band but who really knows what happened, the reality of it all if Matt really was true to Scotty who really started to get him out there to make a name for himself he wouldn't have left.  He would have stood by HIS FRIEND.

Personally I think this new guy when he gets more comfortable will be find, he is a much much better singer than Matt.  That guy couldn't carry a tune in a box.  He could play the guitar that is for sure.

Also, Scotty probably found out right before that last time they all played on Idol - Scotty looked ticked off - so I'm guessing that is the night he was told.

Scotty is too much of a good kid to let what TBP and Matt did to him and the other band members.  I'm sure Scotty wasn't the only one who wasn't too happy.

I always liked Jeff Harper the best,,really funny laid back guy, always laughing with a smile on his face....Matt seemed like kind of a stick in the mud,,,,not gonna miss him at all....Dry County will only be better....as for TBP,,,WHAT GOES AROUND COMES AROUND...The Band WHO ???

by wanda @ 9/2/2013 3:09:38 PM
No, 1 bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch!!

by patabbie @ 9/2/2013 1:35:28 PM
Very good point DieselGal.....loss of 1 doesn't spoil the team!

by DieselGal @ 9/2/2013 1:20:28 PM
I agree with you all. I hope sometime down the road we find out more. One thing we have to remember is that there are 3 other members of Scotty's band. Matt wasn't the only one that made the band good. Them playing so well was a team effort. I really don't see the quality of Scotty's band going down because he still has these 3. Chris Young should fit in well with them.

I just wanted to let you all know that there are lots of videos of the Six Flags Jackson over on you tube.

Type in Scotty McCreery Six Flags Jackson.

WISHING   EVERYONE  ALL  THE  BEST      BACK TO VOTING

by Loretta @ 9/1/2013 7:38:00 AM
I didn't know what to think.   People come and go all the time.  I was hoping that Scotty would mention something about Matt leaving but when he didn't I wondered if TBP committed a wrong doing.  I know that the artist and their bands become very close i.e. Reba's band and I was sort of sad to see Matt bail.  It could be that God was just opening a door of a new lead guitarist to become part of Scotty's Band.  Which ever I wish Matt & the New Guitarist the best and I know Scotty appreciates their service in his rise to stardom.  In our own world we don't always keep the same job through out our life so I will leave the matter in God's hands he see and know all and will deal out the blessings to those most deserving.  Now off to voting for our favorite country singer....Scotty !!

by patabbie @ 8/31/2013 11:40:56 PM
THANK YOU to all of your for voicing your true inner feelings!!  I am relieved.     I posted several days ago that I wasn't feeling as friendly as some about this.  Dagum.....started thinking maybe I wasn't really a very nice person.

There is a smelly fish in this mess.  If it was on the up-and-up, Scotty, kind soul that he is, would've posted/tweeted something very complimentary about Matt and wished him well.

I guess this really can be an ugly business.  But only for those who choose to act that way.

When you mess with Scotty......you have stepped on my toes.  I think we all feel that way about him.

I know how to vote in the future.

by Mammaw Hicks @ 8/31/2013 9:43:45 PM
TBP really stabbed Scotty in the back, dangling a big carrot in front of Matt.  Matt will live to regret this big mistake, because Scotty is going to be so much larger than TBP soon.  However, Scotty is a real problem solver, and he will work this one out.  Also Scotty has his dad to help, and Mike Childers who seems to idolize Scotty.  George Jones had so many different Jones Boys over his career that he lost count of them all.  In a way, it's good that Scotty is learning early that this type thing happens to all entertainers. I watched Scotty's video from his last concert, and the new guy was playing for Scotty.
For some reason I thought Scotty sound better with this young man playing for him.  What do ya'll ?

by wanda @ 8/31/2013 7:10:18 PM
I agree with everybody. My parents taught me at an early age that the grass is never greener on the other side and everything that I do has consequences. I think Matt will find that out in the future. Scotty will be just fine and will move on gracefully.

by cyrlopez @ 8/31/2013 6:32:21 PM
I too think it is a cheap shot by TBP. I have lost a lot of respect for them. Scotty will be just fine. Scotty
is an awesome talent and will be around for a long time. I'm counting the days till Scotty's new album is released.

by lewis @ 8/31/2013 5:23:23 PM
My whole family agrees with what has been said by others.  I THINK IT WAS TOTALLY WRONG FOR THE BAND PERRY, WHO I HAVE ALWAYS RESPECTED, THE TAKE MATT FROM SCOTTY.  SCOTTY WILL PREVAIL AS HE ALWAYS DOES.  KEEP ON MOVING SCOTTY YOU ARE THE GREATEST!

by Grammy @ 8/31/2013 4:11:33 PM
Lynne, your article said everything I was thinking.  Well written, well said.  I think this was a cheap shot by TBP as I know Scotty has been nothing but gracious to Matt as he is with his whole team.  I know Scotty will be okay with this change and move on for the better.  Matt will never work again for such a wonderful, talented, thoughtful, playful person as Scotty.  They had so many good times on and off the stage.  I wish him the best but know he made a big mistake by thinking the grass is greener on the other side.

God Bless you Scotty for moving on and entertaining people with a smile, wonderful stage presence and fantastic voice.  You are truly the best!

by DAR @ 8/31/2013 3:55:45 PM
I FELT THAT IF EVERYTHING WASN'T ON THE UP AND UP THAT WE WOULD HAVE HAD AN EXPLANATION FOR WHY MATT LEFT.  I THOUGHT MAYBE IT HAD TO DO WITH MATT WANTING TO PLAY MORE AND SCOTTY BEING IN SCHOOL.  I REALLY RESPECTED THE BAND PERRY AND DID NOT THINK THEY WOULD DO THAT TO SCOTTY.  THEY SEEMED TO REALLY LOVE HIM.  I THOUGHT MATT WAS DEVOTED TO HIM AND THE BAND TOO.  MATT WILL FIND OUT IT WAS A BIG MISTAKE - BECAUSE WE ALL KNOW THAT SCOTTY IS AND WILL ALWAYS BE 'THE BEST" ARTIST EVER AND MATT WILL LOSE OUT IN THE END AND HE ISN'T THE ONLY GOOD GUITAR PLAYER OUT THERE.

by fan#1 @ 8/31/2013 3:48:47 PM
I AGREE 1000% LYNNE. A GREAT WRITE UP FOR SURE. I WISH MATT ALL THE BEST OF LUCK. I AM HOPING THIS CHRIS YOUNG WILL BE A GREAT FIT FOR SCOTTY'S BAND BECAUSE IT IS THE BEST BAND.
