"Scotty McCreery Debuts Five More Minutes at the Opry"
                              [Exclusive Premiere]

Billy Dukes / Taste Of Country / June 23, 2016

Scotty McCreery reflects on the slippery nature of time in his new song "Five More Minutes."  During a recent performance at the Grand Ole Opry, the singer admitted the song was inspired by the passing of his grandfather.  Watch his emotional performance during this Taste Of Country exclusive premiere.

"Five More Minutes" isn't a song about death, or even fully about his grandfather, although the late patriarch of the McCreery family is recalled in the final verse.  Earlier lyrics find the twenty-two year old asking for more time on the football field and on a girl's front doorstep.  At the chorus, he sings:

The time rolls by, the clock don't stop
I wish I had a few more drops
Of the good stuff, the good times
Aww, but they just keep on flyin'
Right on by like it ain't nothin'
I wish I had me a pause button
Moments like those, Lord knows I'd hit it
And give myself five more minutes

While McCreery doesn't tear up during the Grand Ole Opry performance, it's clear the song is heavy on his heart.

"He's never heard this song, but I know he's watchin' and very proud of me, the fact that I'm at the Grand Ole Opry tonight," McCreery says in the video.  Bill McCreery died at the age of 86 in January 2015.  He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and U.S. Civil Service.  Scotty McCreery Debuts Five More Minutes at the Opry [Watch]

Since his 2011 win on American Idol, Scotty McCreery has graced the Grand Ole Opry stage numerous times, but his most recent appearance there also ranks among the most emotional.

Introducing "Five More Minutes" to the audience, a visibly emotional McCreery explained, "I wrote this song a couple weeks after I lost my grandfather.  We were very close.  He's never heard this song but I know he's watching and very proud of me and the fact that I'm at the Grand Ole Opry tonight."

In the song's poignant lyrics, McCreery looks back at special moments when he was eight years old fishing in a creek, at 16 with a date and a midnight curfew and at 18 talking to the coach after losing his final high school football game.  In the song's final verse, as he recalls his grandfather's final moments with "angels in the room," and the family gathered around to say goodbye, McCreery's performance turns from powerful to incredibly moving.  In the hours after the performance was posted to McCreery's Facebook page, the clip became the top trending post on the social media site.

In April, McCreery paid tribute to the late Merle Haggard on the Opry with a rendition of the legend's "Mama Tried."  He continues to prep his third studio LP, but left the Mercury Nashville label earlier this year after releasing the single, "Southern Belle."
